Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for HBO. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin. We have all at some point in time heard, seen or read about it. From the start this series has been nothing but captivating and without getting into details of season 8, let’s move on!!
Some very famous scenes from the Game of Thrones series have been shot in Belfast and Northern Ireland. On our recent trip to Belfast we decided to go and explore a few of these sites. If you are not too comfortable with driving, there are a lot of tours which which cover the same. They also get along with them some capes and swords to pose with!!! How funn..
Near Storms End, The Stormlands->Cushendun Caves Season 2
Cushendun Cave was used as a location near Storm’s End in the Stromsland in season two and although we see this location only once the consequence of what happens there are far reaching. Following a parley between the brothers, where Baratheon fails in his attempt to get Renly to accept him as the true King. Stannis orders Davos to smuggle Melisandre ashore to a cove situated below Renly’s camp. There Davos watches in horror as the red priestess gives birth to the shadow creature which ultimately kills Renly.
Braavos Canal->Carnlough Season 6, Episode 7
Having been given the go-ahead by Jaquen H’ghar to kill Arya Stark, the Waif repeatedly stabs Arya who only manages to escape by jumping off the bridge into the river. She surfaces, gasping and crawls up the steps into the streets of Braavos. This short scene was shot in the coastal town of Carnlough.
The Iron Island; Dragonstone->Ballinton Beach Season 2, Season 4 and Season 6
Ballinton Beach and its surrounding area has been used to show the Iron Island, seat of House Greyjoy. It has also been used to film the scene where Melisandre presides over the burning of several of Stannis’s bannermen who have refused to cease their open worship of The Seven. The beach is where Theon is baptised into the religion of the Drowned God. Ballinton harbour was first used in season 2 for Lordsport on the island of Pyke, where Theon Greyjoy is seen sailing back home.
On the Kingsroad, north of King’s Landing->The Dark Hedges, Armoy Season 2; Episode 1
Following the death of her father, Ned Stark, Arya escapes King’s Landing disguised by a boy. Travelling on the Kingsroad in the back of a cart along Gendry and Hot Pie, all new recruits for the Night’s Watch, Arya starts her long and arduous journey north.
Game of Thrones Studio Tour, Belfast
The Game of Thrones Studio Tour, an interactive dedication to HBO’s game hit will feature props, sets, costumes and more from the show, all of them housed at Linen Mill Studios in Corbet-Banbridge, Northern Ireland, one of the series’ principal filming locations. It is due to open soon.
